Bhutan Visa Cost & Application Process
Who Needs a Visa to Travel to Bhutan?
All international visitors require a Bhutanese visa to enter Bhutan, which must be processed either through a licensed Bhutanese travel operator (such as Access Bhutan Tours & Treks) or directly through the Department of Immigration, Royal Government of Bhutan.
The only exceptions are citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, who follow separate visa processes and fee structures.
All tourist visas must be obtained in advance of your travel date. Bhutanese visas are issued exclusively by the Department of Immigration, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, through its head office in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan.
Important Note: Bhutanese embassies and foreign missions abroad do not issue tourist visas.
Bhutanese Visa Cost & Documents Required for Bhutanese Visa Application
To apply for a Bhutanese tourist visa, the following are required:
- A digital copy of your valid passport
- A recent headshot photo
- Confirmed travel dates (arrival and departure)
- Visa fee: USD 40 per person (one-time payment)
- SDF (Sustainable Development Fee): USD 100 per person, per night
Note: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Bhutan.
How to Obtain Your Bhutanese Visa
Once your Bhutan trip is confirmed and full payment of your tour package—including the visa fee and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)—has been made, we, as your local Bhutan travel operator, will process your Bhutanese visa on your behalf.
Visa approval typically takes up to five business days, after which your e-visa will be emailed to you before your departure. You must carry either a printed or digital copy of the e-visa, as it is required at the Drukair/Bhutan Airlines check-in counters at your departure airport, as well as at the Immigration counter upon arrival at Paro International Airport.
The actual visa will be stamped in your passport upon arrival, either by air (at Paro International Airport) or at one of the designated land entry points: Phuentsholing, Gelephu, or Samdrup Jongkhar.
Bhutanese Visa Duration & Extension
Your Bhutanese visa will be issued for the duration of your confirmed tour. If you wish to extend your stay in Bhutan, a visa extension must be requested before your original visa expires.
We can assist you with the visa extension process. The Bhutanese visa extension fee is BTN 2000 per person or equivalent in USD.
