Bhutan Flight Information: Airports, Airlines & Travel Tips

Bhutan Flight

Bhutan Flight Information is essential for travelers planning a trip to this Himalayan kingdom. Currently, Bhutan has only one international airport—Paro International Airport—located at 7,300 feet above sea level and surrounded by dramatic peaks rising up to 16,000 feet. The descent into Paro is famously scenic, especially the flight between Paro and Kathmandu, which offers views of four of the five highest mountains in the world, including Mount Everest.

Within the country, domestic air services connect Paro to Bumthang, Yonphula in eastern Bhutan, and Gelephu in south-central Bhutan. These routes are operated by Drukair, though flights are suspended during the monsoon season (June to late September)

Airlines Flying In and Out of Bhutan

Two airlines operate international flights to and from Bhutan:

  • Drukair – Royal Bhutan Airlines: Offers daily flights between Paro and Bangkok. It also connects to Kathmandu, Singapore, Dhaka, Bagdogra, Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati.

  • Bhutan Airlines (Tashi Air): Operates flights to/from Bangkok, New Delhi, Kathmandu, and Dubai.

Travel by Land

Travelers can also enter Bhutan by road through three border towns shared with India:

1. Phuentsholing (Southwest Bhutan)

Located 170 km from Bagdogra Airport (India), it offers a scenic 6-hour drive to Thimphu.

2. Gelephu (South-Central Bhutan)

Roughly 250 km from Thimphu, the route covers varied terrain and takes about 10 hours.

3. Samdrup Jongkhar (Southeast Bhutan)

About 150 km or 3 hours from Guwahati Airport (Assam, India). Travelers can journey through eastern Bhutan toward Thimphu in around 3 days (approx. 700 km).

Nearby Nepalese airports like Bhadrapur (5.5 hours) and Biratnagar (7 hours) also offer access to Bhutan via Phuentsholing.

Domestic Flights in Bhutan

Domestic services provided by Drukair use ATR 42 aircraft and link Paro with Bumthang, Yonphula, and Gelephu. However, these flights are seasonal and do not run during the monsoon months.
