This trek is ideal for trekkers seeking a moderate-to-challenging adventure combined with breathtaking scenery and deep cultural immersion in Bhutan’s highland traditions.

Detailed Tour Itinerary:

Day 1 Arrive & Paro Cultural Exploration - overnight at hotel in Paro

Altitude at Paro:2200 m

Upon arrival at Paro airport,you will be warmly received by our tour guide and driver and check into your hotel. Relax for a while as you will be tired from your journey.

After lunch enjoy a leisurely scenic walk to Paro Rinpung Dzong. Built in 1645 to defend the valley against Tibetan invasions, the dzong now serves as both an administrative center and a monastic school. After exploring, walk down through Nyamai Zampa (Rimpung Bridge), Bhutan’s oldest traditional cantilever bridge, where your vehicle will be waiting to pick up.

Next,visit Dzongdrakha temple:Often called the mini- Taktsang, Dzongdrakha temples are built on the cliffs above Bondey village. Take a short walk to the temple for about 15 minutes. Legend says one of the temples is built around a levitating monument. Folks built a stronger temple around this monument with the hope that the levitating monument does not fly away into the sky.

In the late evening take a leisurely walk through bustling Paro town to observe local life.

Day 2: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery & immersive village life experience with Traditional Hotstone bath -overnight at hotel in Paro

Altitude at Taktsang:3000 m

After breakfast, drive to the base of Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest. Begin your hike, which takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach the viewpoint, where you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the monastery perched dramatically on the cliffside. Stop for refreshments at the Viewpoint Cafeteria. The final stretch to the monastery takes another 1.5 hours.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this site on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated in a cave here for three months. The principal monastery of the present complex dates back to 1692. Though severely damaged by fire in 1998, Taktsang has since been fully restored to its former glory.

After exploring the monastery, descend to the Viewpoint Cafeteria for lunch before continuing your walk back to the base.

Later, visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, upon arrival you will be welcomed with traditional Bhutanese tea and snacks, providing a warm introduction to Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage. After the tea, engage yourself in Bhutan’s National Sport by trying your hand at Archery, using traditional bows & arrows crafted from bamboo. Later in the evening you can unwind with a rejuvenating hot stone bath—a therapeutic experience deeply rooted in Bhutanese culture. For dinner enjoy a homemade dinner with your hosts.

Day 3: Paro-Shana-Soe -Thangthangkha - overnight in camp

Distance: 22–23 km
Trekking Time: 7–8 hours
Camp Altitude: 3,610 m

Difficulty: Moderate

In the morning, drive along an unpaved road from Drukgyel Dzong to Gunetsawa village near Army Camp, where your trek begins. The trail follows the river valley, gradually climbing and narrowing as you ascend. It winds through mixed terrain with frequent ascents and descents before opening into a meadow with a stone shelter at 3,720 m, where you will camp for the night.

Day 4: Thangthangkha – Jangothang - overnight in camp

Distance: 19 km
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Camp Altitude: 4,040 m

Difficulty: Easy

The trail follows the Pa Chhu River, which flows down from the high mountains into the Paro Valley. After passing a small army outpost, the valley gradually opens up, revealing expansive views of high ridges, snow-capped peaks, grazing yaks, and the temporary shelters of yak herders. The day’s trek ends at Jangothang, set near the ruins of an old fortress at the foot of majestic Mt. Jomolhari (4,040 m), one of the most iconic campsites in Bhutan.

Follow the trail along the Pachhu River (river flowing through Paro valley). After passing a small army outpost, the valley widens, offering stunning views of high ridges, snow-capped peaks, yaks, and yak herder make shift huts. The day’s trek concludes near the ruins of an old fortress at the base of Mt. Jomolhari (4,040 m).

Day 5:Jangothang halt & Explore Jhomolhari Base camp - overnight in camp

Today is the rest day and you can do the following activities as per your interests:

  • Explore nearby yak herder settlements and trout-filled lakes
  • Hike towards the glaciers of Mt. Jomolhari for panoramic views
  • Visit local nomadic village farmhouses.

Day 6:Jangothang - Soi Yaktsa - overnight in camp

Distance: 16 km
Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
Camp Altitude: 3,800 m

Difficulty: Strenuous

Leaving Jangothang, the trail passes the last settlement in the valley before descending to the Paro Chhu River. The route then climbs steeply past the turquoise Tshophu Lake (4,380 m), offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks lining the eastern horizon. Continue ascending to Bhonte La Pass (4,890 m), the highest point of the trek, where sweeping Himalayan panoramas reward your effort. From the pass, descend to the Dhumzo Chhu River and follow the trail downstream, passing the scattered houses of Soi Yaktsa (Dhumzo), before reaching your campsite for the night.

Day 7: Soi Yaktsa- Thombu Shong - overnight in camp

Distance: 11 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Camp Altitude: 4,180 m

Difficulty: Moderate

The day begins with a gradual climb of about 100 meters to cross a ridge, followed by a short descent to a stream. The trail then ascends steadily to Takhung La Pass (4,520 m), offering rewarding mountain views along the way. From the pass, descend through open alpine terrain to reach Thombu Shong, a scenic campsite set beside three yak herder huts, surrounded by pristine highland landscape.

Day 8: Thombu Shong- Gunitsawa village-Paro-Thimphu - overnight at hotel in Thimphu

Distance: 13 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Paro-Thimphu: Driving Distance:54km,estimated driving time:1 hour

Start the day with a gradual ascent through an alpine garden adorned with vibrant wildflowers, reaching Thombu La Pass (4,380 m). From the pass, descend steeply through varied terrain until you arrive at Gunitsawa Village (2,730 m). Here, your vehicle will be waiting to take you on a scenic drive back to Paro, followed by a transfer to Thimphu.

Day 9: Thimphu Cultural Exploration - overnight at hotel in Thimphu

Full day Thimphu cultural tour visiting some of the following cultural and historical highlights of Thimphu, depending on your time availability and personal interests:

  • Buddha Dordenma at Kuenselphodrang: This massive Buddha statue is 51.5 meters in height and it is one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world.
  • National Institute for Zorig Chusum, also known as the School of Traditional Arts and Crafts. Here, young Bhutanese undergo six years of intensive training in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, including thangka painting, sculpture, wood carving, and embroidery.
  • Zilukha Nunnery (Drubthob Goemba Monastery)-Perched on a serene ridge overlooking the majestic Tashichho Dzong, the Zilukha Nunnery offers a peaceful retreat from the bustle of Thimphu town. The monastery, also known as Drubthob Goemba, is home to a community of devout Buddhist nuns who dedicate their lives to spiritual practice, prayer, and meditation.
  • Takin Preserve: Visit this peaceful preserve nestled in the forested hills, home to Bhutan’s national animal, the takin—a rare, goat-antelope-like species native to the Eastern Himalayas.
  • Simtokha Dzong:The name Simtokha literally means “Atop a Demon”, it was built in order to subdue an evil spirit that was harassing travelers in the region in 1629 by Shadrung Ngawang Namgyal ( a spiritual man who unified Bhutan).
  • Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Center, where skilled women bring Bhutanese textile traditions to life. Watch as they meticulously weave intricate patterns using vibrant silk and cotton threads.
  • Centenary Farmers’ Market: Immerse yourself in local life at this vibrant weekend market where farmers from surrounding villages sell fresh organic produces.
  • Flag Lowering Ceremony at Tashichhoe Dzong (Around 5:00 PM): End your day with the solemn flag-lowering ceremony at Tashichhoe Dzong, a grand 17th-century fortress on the banks of the Wangchu River.

Day 10 Thimphu to Punakha Cultural Exploration & Immersive Village Experience to Thimphu - overnight at hotel in Thimphu

After breakfast, depart Thimphu for Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital and the sacred site where the country’s first monarch was crowned.

About 35 minutes into the drive, arrive at Dochula Pass (3,088 m), one of Bhutan’s most scenic mountain passes. On clear days, enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the Himalayan range. The pass is adorned with the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens, offering a serene and photogenic setting against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.

Continue the journey for approximately 1.5 hours to Sopsokha Village, a charming rural settlement surrounded by picturesque paddy fields near Lobesa. From here, enjoy a gentle 20-minute walk through the village to Chimi Lhakhang, the famed monastery of the Divine Madman (Lama Drukpa Kunley). Widely revered as a fertility shrine, the temple is believed to bless visitors seeking fertility and well-being.

Next, visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, where you will experience warm rural hospitality and savor an authentic, home-cooked Bhutanese lunch prepared by the host family.

In the afternoon, proceed to Punakha Dzong (Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang), meaning “Palace of Great Happiness.” Dramatically situated at the confluence of the Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River), this majestic fortress is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and historically significant dzongs.

From the dzong, take a scenic 15-minute walk to one of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridges, stretching approximately 350 meters above the rushing Pho Chu. The bridge links Punakha Dzong to Lungkha Village and is primarily used by locals as a traditional footpath.

Enjoy a peaceful walk through Lungkha Village, wandering among lush rice fields and interacting with friendly local farmers for an authentic glimpse into rural Bhutanese life.

Later in the afternoon, drive back to Thimphu.

Day 11: Thimphu to Paro Airport for Departure

Distance:54km, estimated driving time:1 hour

After breakfast, take a scenic drive to Paro airport where we will see you off at the Paro airport for onward journey.
