Overview of Tour itinerary

This is a short five day trek, which leads from Paro to Thimphu or vice versa, crossing the chain of mountains that separates the two valleys. Although the route is sparsely inhabited, there are wonderful lakes teeming with fish and the area is famous for its spectacular rhododendron forests, which bloom in May. In the clear weather of late autumn and winter there are great views of the Himalayan ranges and snowcapped peaks.

Detailed Tour Itinerary:

Day 1 Arrive & Paro Cultural Exploration - overnight at hotel in Paro

Altitude at Paro:2200 m

Upon arrival at Paro airport,you will be warmly received by our tour guide and driver and check into your hotel. Relax for a while as you will be tired from your journey.

After lunch enjoy a leisurely scenic walk to Paro Rinpung Dzong. Built in 1645 to defend the valley against Tibetan invasions, the dzong now serves as both an administrative center and a monastic school. After exploring, walk down through Nyamai Zampa (Rimpung Bridge), Bhutan’s oldest traditional cantilever bridge, where your vehicle will be waiting to pick up.

Next,visit Dzongdrakha temple:Often called the mini- Taktsang, Dzongdrakha temples are built on the cliffs above Bondey village. Take a short walk to the temple for about 15 minutes. Legend says one of the temples is built around a levitating monument. Folks built a stronger temple around this monument with the hope that the levitating monument does not fly away into the sky.

In the late evening take a leisurely walk through bustling Paro town to observe local life.

Day 2: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery & immersive village life experience with Traditional Hotstone bath -overnight at hotel in Paro

Altitude at Taktsang:3000 m

 After breakfast, drive to the base of Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest. Begin your hike, which takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach the viewpoint, where you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the monastery perched dramatically on the cliffside. Stop for refreshments at the Viewpoint Cafeteria. The final stretch to the monastery takes another 1.5 hours.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this site on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated in a cave here for three months. The principal monastery of the present complex dates back to 1692. Though severely damaged by fire in 1998, Taktsang has since been fully restored to its former glory.

After exploring the monastery, descend to the Viewpoint Cafeteria for lunch before continuing your walk back to the base.

Later, visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, upon arrival you will be welcomed with traditional Bhutanese tea and snacks, providing a warm introduction to Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage. After the tea, engage yourself in Bhutan’s National Sport by trying your hand at Archery, using traditional bows & arrows crafted from bamboo. Later in the evening you can unwind with a rejuvenating hot stone bath—a therapeutic experience deeply rooted in Bhutanese culture. For dinner enjoy a homemade dinner with your hosts.

Day 3 Paro -Jeledzong - overnight in camp

Trek Distance: 8 km
Treking Time: 4–5 hrs
Elevation Gain/loss: 1200 m accent (from 2250 to 3450)
Difficulty: Moderate – steady uphill climb

Today is a relatively short but scenic trekking day. The trail begins with a gradual ascent through pine forests and meadows to the campsite near Jele Dzong. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Paro Valley framed by snow-capped peaks. Above the camp lies Jele-la Pass (3,450 m) and Jele Dzong, a small fortress mostly in ruins but still housing a lhakhang with a statue of Buddha Sakyamuni.

Day 4: Jeledzong - Jangchu Lhakhang - overnight in camp

Distance: 10 km
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Elevation Gain/loss : 400 m accent (from 3450 to 3800m)
Difficulty: Moderate

The day begins with a steady climb of about 1.5 hours before the trail eases into a more gradual ascent. You will pass through thick alpine forests of rhododendron and juniper, with opportunities to spot colorful monal pheasants along the way. On a clear day, enjoy spectacular views of Mount Chomolhari and other snow-capped peaks. As you approach the campsite, you may encounter yak herders tending to their animals in the surrounding pastures.

Day 5: Jangchu Lhakhang – Jimilangtso - overnight in camp

Trek Distance: 11 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain /loss: 100 m accent (from 3800m to 3900m)
Difficulty: Moderate

The trail today follows a scenic ridge, offering sensational views of the surrounding mountains and valleys on a clear day. You will be treated to an impressive view of Jichu Drake (6,989 m), considered the protective deity of Paro. The campsite is near the tranquil Jimilangtso lakes, renowned for their giant trout and peaceful alpine setting. Yak herders occasionally graze their animals nearby, enhancing the authentic Himalayan experience

Day 6: Jimilangtso – Simkota - overnight in camp

Trek Distance: 12 km
Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Camp Altitude: ~3,200 m
Elevation gain/Loss: 650 m descent (from 3900 to 3500m)
Difficulty: Moderate, mostly downhill

Today’s trail descends gradually from the high-altitude Jimilangtso lakes through alpine meadows and mixed forests of pine and rhododendron. Along the way, you will pass yak herder settlements and small streams, experiencing the tranquil Himalayan landscape. On clear days, you can enjoy views of the surrounding valleys and distant snow-capped peaks. The campsite at Simkota is nestled in a lush meadow, offering a peaceful setting for overnight camping.

Day 7 O: Simkota-Phajoding-Thimphu -overnight at hotel in Thimphu

Trek Distance: ~10 km
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Elevation Gain/Loss: Start at 3,250 m (Simikota), accent to  Phajoding :3,600 m, descent to Thimphu :2,330 m

Difficulty: Moderate climb to Phajoding, then downhill to Thimphu

The day begins with a gentle ascent from Simkota to Phajoding Monastery, a serene religious site perched above Thimphu valley. The monastery offers panoramic views of the Thimphu valley and surrounding peaks. After exploring Phajoding, the trail descends gradually through forests of pine and rhododendron toward Thimphu, Bhutan’s vibrant capital. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel to relax and enjoy the comforts of the city.

Day 8: Thimphu Cultural Exploration, overnight at hotel in Thimphu

Full day Thimphu cultural tour visiting some of the following cultural and historical highlights of Thimphu, depending on your time availability and personal interests:

  • Buddha Dordenma at Kuenselphodrang: This massive Buddha statue is 51.5 meters in height and it is one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world.
  • National Institute for Zorig Chusum, also known as the School of Traditional Arts and Crafts. Here, young Bhutanese undergo six years of intensive training in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, including thangka painting, sculpture, wood carving, and embroidery.
  • Nado Poizokhang Incense Factory: this factory churns out about 10,000 sticks of handmade incense monthly. You can watch the production process (grinding, extruding and drying).
  • Takin Preserve: Visit this peaceful preserve nestled in the forested hills, home to Bhutan’s national animal, the takin—a rare, goat-antelope-like species native to the Eastern Himalayas.
  • Next, explore the oldest Dzong in Bhutan –Simtokha Dzong:The name Simtokha literally means “Atop a Demon”, it was built in order to subdue an evil spirit that was harassing travelers in the region in 1629 by Shadrung Ngawang Namgyal ( a spiritual man who unified Bhutan).
  • Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Center, where skilled women bring Bhutanese textile traditions to life. Watch as they meticulously weave intricate patterns using vibrant silk and cotton threads.
  • Centenary Farmers’ Market: Immerse yourself in local life at this vibrant weekend market where farmers from surrounding villages sell fresh organic produces.
  • Flag Lowering Ceremony at Tashichhoe Dzong (Around 5:00 PM): End your day with the solemn flag-lowering ceremony at Tashichhoe Dzong, a grand 17th-century fortress on the banks of the Wangchu River.

Day 9 Thimphu to Punakha & Cultural Exploration & Immersive Village Experience & Return to Thimphu

Distance: 71 km & estimated driving time: 2 hours one way
Altitude at Dochula:3140 m
Altitude at Punakha:1300

After breakfast, depart for Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan and the site where the country’s first monarch was crowned.

Approximately 35 minutes into the journey, you will arrive at Dochula Pass (3,088m), a breathtaking vantage point offering panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range on a clear day. The pass is also home to the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens (stupas), making it a perfect spot for photography, with the snow-capped peaks providing a stunning backdrop.

From here, continue driving for about 1.5 hours to Sopsokha, a charming village nestled amid picturesque paddy fields near Lobesa and take a leisurely 20-minute walk through Sopsokha village to visit Chimi Lhakhang, the renowned Divine Madman’s Monastery. Known as a fertility shrine, the temple is believed to bless visitors seeking fertility, making it a significant spiritual site in Bhutan.

Later visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, where you will experience the warmth of rural hospitality as the host family serves a hearty, authentic Bhutanese lunch.

After lunch head to  Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang, meaning “Palace of Great Happiness.” Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River), Punakha Dzong is one of Bhutan’s most magnificent and historically significant fortresses.

From the Dzong, take a scenic 15-minute walk to one of Bhutan’s longest suspension bridges, spanning 350 meters high above the swift-flowing Pho Chu. The bridge connects Punakha Dzong to the nearby village of Lungkha,primarily used by locals as a shortcut.

Immerse yourself in the tranquility of Lungkha village by strolling through its lush paddy fields and engaging in conversations with friendly farmers.

Later in the afternoon travel back to Thimphu.

Day 10: Thimphu to Paro Airport for Departure

After breakfast, take a scenic drive to Paro airport where we will see you off at the Paro airport for onward journey.
