After breakfast, begin your day with a visit to the iconic Buddha Dordenma at Kuenselphodrang – one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, standing at a height of 51.5 meters. Made of bronze and gilded in gold, this majestic statue sits atop a meditation hall and overlooks the southern entrance of Thimphu Valley. Located within the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, the Buddha Dordenma fulfills a centuries-old prophecy foretold by Terton Pema Lingpa and is believed to radiate peace and harmony across the world.

Next, visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, also known as the School of Traditional Arts and Crafts. Here, young Bhutanese undergo six years of intensive training in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, including thangka painting, sculpture, wood carving, and embroidery. A visit here offers deep insight into the country’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.

Continue to Simtokha Dzong, the oldest dzong in Bhutan, built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to subdue an evil spirit said to haunt the region. The name Simtokha means “Atop a Demon,” and the dzong now houses one of the premier institutes for Dzongkha language learning.

Afterwards, explore Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Center, where skilled female weavers bring Bhutanese textile traditions to life. Watch them create intricate patterns using vibrant silk and cotton, producing traditional kiras, scarves, shawls, and ghos.

After lunch, travel to Paro Valley and enjoy a scenic walk across Rimpung Bridge (Nyaime Zampa), Bhutan’s oldest traditional cantilever bridge, leading you to the magnificent Paro Rinpung Dzong, built in 1645 to defend the valley. Later in the afternoon, take a short 10-minute drive to Bondey village, followed by a gentle 20-minute uphill walk to reach Dzongdrakha Temple – often called the “mini Taktsang.” Perched on cliffs above Bondey, these temples are steeped in legends, including one about a levitating monument secured within one of the shrines to prevent it from flying into the sky.
