Overview of the Tour itinerary

Bhutan tours
National Museum, Paro

Distance: 54 km & estimated driving time: 1 hour
Altitude at Thimphu: 2330 m

Upon arrival at Paro airport ,you will be warmly received by our tour guide (who will be your Bhutan travel guide during your entire tour in Bhutan) and you will drive to Thimphu, passing through Chunzom, the confluence of the Paro River (Pachu) and the Thimphu River (Wangchu). After crossing Chunzom, the drive follows the Wangchu River, offering picturesque views as you make your way to Thimphu city-the vibrant capital city of Bhutan.

Upon arrival at Thimphu check into your hotel. After a brief refreshment visit Simtokha Dzong:The name Simtokha literally means “Atop a Demon” and the legend associated with the dzong’s construction tells us that it was built in order to subdue an evil spirit that was harassing travelers in the region. It was built in 1629 by Shadrung Ngawang Namgyal ( a spiritual man who unified Bhutan) .It is said to be the first dzong built in Bhutan.

Next, visit Buddha Dordenma at Kuenselphodrang: This massive Buddha statue is 51.5 meters in height and it is one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The statue is made of bronze and is gilded in gold. The throne that the Buddha Dordenma sits upon is a large meditation hall.
The Buddha Dordenma is located atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park and overlooks the Southern entrance to Thimphu Valley. The statue fulfills an ancient prophecy dating back to the 8th century A.D that was discovered by Terton Pema Lingpa (Religious Treasure Discoverer) and is said to emanate an aura of peace and happiness to the entire world.

From Kuenselphodrang proceed to the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, commonly known as the School of Traditional Painting of Arts and Crafts. Here, students undergo a six-year training program encompassing Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts and crafts, ranging from painting and sculpture to wood carving and embroidery. Visitors can observe students diligently honing their skills, offering a profound appreciation for Bhutan’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage.

After lunch visit Centenary Farmers’ Market: Most residents of Thimphu and nearby areas gather at the bustling Centenary Farmers Market, where local farmers sell fresh produce from the surrounding regions. A visit to this vibrant market offers excellent photo opportunities and a unique chance to engage with locals in an authentic, lively atmosphere

From here, take a short 5-minute walk to observe an archery match-the national sport of Bhutan-at Changlimithang National Stadium. You will often find Bhutanese men playing archery during weekends or public holidays. It’s a great opportunity to witness a cherished local Bhutanese tradition and interact with the local community of Thimphu.

From the Archery ground drive for about 15 minutes to visit the Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin—an extremely rare member of the goat-antelope family found only in Bhutan. These unique creatures, which can weigh up to 550 pounds, live in herds at high altitudes of 13,125 feet and above, surviving on a diet of grass and bamboo. At the preserve, they are protected in their natural habitat.

Later in the afternoon stroll through bustling Thimphu city and also visit Craft Bazaar – A one-stop shop to experience Bhutanese culture and purchase authentic, locally made Bhutanese art and craft products. With around 80 stalls, the bazaar showcases the full spectrum of Bhutan’s traditional arts and crafts. Artisans and craftsmen from across the country gather here to display and sell their handmade creations.

In the evening watch the National Flag Lowering Ceremony at Tashichhoe Dzong, a fortress of the glorious religion. It was built in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and was reconstructed into present structure by the late King, His majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck in the year 1962-1969. It houses the secretariat building, the throne room and the office of the king, and the central monk body.

Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Thimphu.

Day 2:Thimphu to Paro & :Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery & Bhutanese Traditional Hotstone bath, overnight at hotel in Paro

Bhutan Mountain tour
Tiger's Nest, Paro Bhutan

Distance: 54 km & estimated driving time: 1 hour
Altitude at Paro: 2200 m
Altitude at Taktsang:3000m

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic 1-hour drive to the base of Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest-a must-visit landmark for every traveler on a Bhutan tour. Begin your hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, a journey that takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach the main viewpoint. From here, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the monastery dramatically perched on a cliffside. Pause for refreshments at the Viewpoint Cafeteria before continuing the final 1.5-hour ascent to the monastery.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this site on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated in a cave here for three months. The principal monastery, as seen today, was built in 1692. Although it suffered severe fire damage in 1998, Taktsang has since been fully restored, with its sacred relics and shrines remaining miraculously untouched.

After exploring the monastery, descend to the Viewpoint Cafeteria for lunch before making your way back to the base. Later, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Paro town and interact with the friendly locals.

Later in the evening, visit a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, where you can unwind with a rejuvenating Bhutanese traditional hot stone bath – a therapeutic experience deeply rooted in Bhutanese culture. A farmhouse visit offers insight into the daily life of Bhutanese people, particularly those in Paro Valley and enjoy a homemade traditional Bhutanese cuisine for dinner with your hosts.

Overnight at a hotel in Paro.

Day 3: Departure from Paro.

After breakfast our tour guide and driver of Access Bhutan Tours and Treks- your local Bhutan travel operator-will see you off at the Paro airport for your flight to your onward destinations.
